Belgian band that plays amazing percussion-based music using various indigenous instruments. According to their website:
I’ve been enjoying this one a lot. Beatnik jazz meets North-African sounding hand-drum rhythms, topped with trippy speak-sung French poetry.
Another classic album from Hip Hop’s golden age. This one pretty much blueprinted the West Coast sound for the rest of the decade: thick 70s funk samples and lots of synths. The production is stellar, and Snoop Dogg (who appears on almost every track) just about steals the show with his outrageous antics.
Stark, moody songs performed by this wild man from Crete. He growls and moans about lost love, hurls stones at the moon, admires the rugged freedom of feral mountain goats, and pleads with his mama not to yell at him too much.
The original SMiLE recordings.
This one’s for Timmy. Tuvan throat-singing. Enjoy, dude.
Classic Wu-Tang solo record. Gritty gangster narratives set to some of RZA’s most intense production. The hugely anticipated sequel to this album should be coming out sometime this month. Keep an eye out for it.
Arrrrrrr!! This was released in conjunction with Pirates of the Caribbean 2. The film’s producers got a bunch of people together (including Ralph Steadman, for some reason) and had them record pirate tunes and sea shanties. Check out the list of contributors at allmusic:
