Jorge Ben – A Tábua de Esmeralda

Some of Ben’s strongest songwriting here. A fantastic collection of joyful rhythms and melodies, and a great soundtrack to the beginning of the summer.

  1. Love Jorge Ben. My gateway album to his work was 'Samba Esquema Novo'...heard it while shopping for records at Other Music in NYC back in the early '00s. It's a great acoustic record, raw Ben. Later, I heard a street musician in Barcelona, up in Parc Guelle, singing 'Chove Chuva', and somehow reinforced the awesomeness of the songs on that album. Since then, I picked up 'Africa Brazil' and the ST, 1969 album. He also makes a great guest appearance on Os Mutantes classic 'A Minha Menina' now of McDonald's commercial fame :) zoinks.

  2. Other Music is such a great store. Lucky New Yorkers… Thanks for mentioning the Samba Esquema album. I’ll have to look it up. I got into him through the one he made with Gilberto Gil, which I picked up on a whim a while back and is now probably my favourite album. Definitely check it out if you haven’t yet. It’s one of my very first posts here. And yeah, gotta love that McDonalds commercial.
